Types of Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. You are going in and out of hypnosis all day long. You’d be surprised how many times a day your Critical Faculty is bypassed. The following sections describe states of hypnosis:

Waking Hypnosis:

We have all been subjected to waking hypnosis which occurs in many different situations. A suggestion is accepted into the subconscious mind while a person is in a waking state. To be subjected to waking hypnosis, three factors have to be present:

  • A person has to have a focus
  • The credibility of an authority
  • Emotion

An example of waking hypnosis:

  • You went to see your doctor for one reason or another (focus).
  • The doctor tells you some very detrimental information that is vital to
your survival (the doctor is an authority).
  • You get very alarmed by the information that the doctor tells you
and you decide to take action (being alarmed is the emotion).

In this example, you were subjected to waking hypnosis. There are many examples that can be taken from our daily lives and, in this way, every hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

Neutral Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. You’re going in and out of hypnosis all day long. It happens during daily activities such as driving (e.g. road trance). Have you ever arrived somewhere and asked yourself how you got there? Daydreaming while watching TV is another example. It occurs when your mind wanders and you look at the screen and all you see is a blank. Anytime you find yourself in a situation where your mind is not really present, then you know that you have experienced natural hypnosis. You’d be surprised how many times your Critical Faculty is bypassed every day. For instance, recall the last time you read a really good book – one that was so good you could not put it down. It literally had you on the edge of your seat, and you could even imagine yourself being there in the action. Your heart started beating faster and your breath was deeper. Your imagination had kicked in, in a big way, and your body started to respond to the action of the words just as if it was really happening! The thing to know is that, in your mind, imagining an event is as real as actually doing it! Successful athletes use this all the time as a way to train before the actual event. When you imagine or visualize an event happening, your Critical Faculty is bypassed and your mind and body respond according to what you imagine!

Sleeping Hypnosis

When a person is in a light state of sleep, a hypnotist can make suggestions without waking the client up.

Trance Hypnosis

This state is induced during hypnosis. The trance state is produced by the hypnotherapist for therapeutic purposes and is achieved by using various methods. In this stage, the subconscious mind is open to suggestions. In order to achieve the best results for the client, the client has to have a belief, a desire, and an expectancy to reach the goal that brought him/her to the hypnotherapist’s office.
